Popular Lagos socialite and nightlife influencer, Mike Eze-Nwalie Nwogu, popularly known as Pretty Mike of Lagos, has sparked widespread debate after making a dramatic entrance at the 50th birthday celebration of socialite and businesswoman, Helen Ezisi, accompanied by 50 men and women dressed in full legal regalia.
The event, which took place in Lagos over the weekend, featured an entourage clad in wigs, gowns, collars, and tabs commonly associated with legal practitioners appearing before Nigeria’s superior courts. The spectacle, characteristic of Pretty Mike’s flair for unconventional public appearances, has generated mixed reactions, with some describing it as a tribute to the legal profession and others viewing it as an inappropriate use of professional symbols.
According to posts shared on his social media platforms, Pretty Mike dedicated the themed entrance to lawyers, whom he described as “the backbone of order, justice and structure in society.” He stated that the concept was designed to commemorate Helen Ezisi’s golden jubilee, with the 50 individuals dressed as lawyers symbolizing her 50th birthday.
Despite the legal theme, the celebrant is not a member of the legal profession. Helen Ezisi is a Lagos-based businesswoman and socialite married to Chief Tochukwu Ezisi, National President of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF). Reports indicate that the legal motif was conceived by Pretty Mike as a personal creative expression, influenced in part by his recent legal experiences.
The development comes months after the socialite’s widely publicized legal battle arising from allegations connected to activities at his nightclub. He was eventually discharged by the Federal High Court in Lagos after his legal team, led by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, successfully defended him. Observers believe the experience may have informed his decision to publicly acknowledge the legal profession, albeit in his trademark theatrical style.
The display has triggered extensive reactions across social media platforms. While some users questioned whether the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) should comment on the use of legal attire in a social setting, others criticised the stunt as diminishing the dignity traditionally associated with the legal profession. Conversely, supporters argued that the presentation was merely a form of entertainment and consistent with Pretty Mike’s long-established reputation for elaborate themed appearances.
Legal commentators note that although rules governing legal practice regulate the use of professional attire by lawyers within official settings, there is currently no specific law prohibiting non-lawyers from wearing legal-style costumes at private events, provided there is no impersonation of a legal practitioner or attempt to exercise legal authority.
Nevertheless, some observers have expressed concern that the use of wigs and gowns as party costumes could erode the symbolic significance attached to court regalia and the administration of justice.

The birthday celebration was held at a private venue in Lagos, while the after-party reportedly continued at Proxy Lagos, a nightclub located on Victoria Island and owned by Pretty Mike.
