The Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos has adjourned proceedings in the alleged fraud case involving a 42-year-old Point of Sale (PoS) operator, Kafayat Morayo Salami, until August 12, 2026.
Chief Magistrate Ejiro Kubeinje fixed the new date following an application by defence counsel, Abdullahi Haroon, who requested additional time to conduct further investigations into the matter.
Salami, who is facing allegations arising from a disputed financial transaction, was previously remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre on May 4, 2026, before subsequently securing bail after spending 16 days in custody.
The case originated from a complaint involving a police officer attached to the Ago-Okota Police Division, Sergeant Ruth Umar. According to Salami, the officer’s 15-year-old daughter, Peace Godwin, had approached her on April 13, 2026, to carry out a transaction allegedly on her mother’s instructions.
Salami claimed the teenager requested a transfer of ₦645,000 to a First Bank account and collected ₦100,000 in cash, leaving an outstanding balance of ₦234,000.
She further alleged that the following day, she was arrested by police officers and taken to the Ago-Okota Police Station before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba.
The PoS operator maintained that the teenager had previously conducted similar transactions on behalf of her mother and alleged that she was assaulted while in police custody. According to her, officers slapped her, removed her hijab and denied her access to family members, including her husband.
Salami also alleged that when Sergeant Umar later appeared at the SCID with her daughter, the officer prevented the teenager from disclosing details of the account used in the disputed transaction.
Reports indicate that after the matter attracted public attention, investigating officers proceeded with efforts to prosecute the case. Salami was invited to the SCID on May 4 for what she believed was further investigation but was subsequently arraigned before the court on the same day.
At the resumed proceedings, the defence sought additional time to review the facts of the case, following which the court adjourned the matter until August 12, 2026, for hearing.
