A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, on Wednesday granted the immediate past Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, bail in the sum of N100 million following his arraignment on alleged corruption charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice Peter Kekemeke admitted the former CCT Chairman to bail after he pleaded not guilty to a four-count charge alleging that he conferred undue advantage on himself while serving as head of the Tribunal.
As part of the bail conditions, the court ordered Umar to produce one surety in like sum. The surety must possess a valid Certificate of Occupancy for a property located within the Federal Capital Territory.
During the proceedings, Umar’s counsel urged the court to grant bail on liberal terms, arguing that the defendant had been on administrative bail throughout the EFCC’s investigation and had consistently honoured all invitations extended to him by the anti-graft agency.
The prosecution opposed the application, contending that Umar posed a flight risk and could interfere with prosecution witnesses, particularly individuals who served under him during his tenure as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
However, Justice Kekemeke held that the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence to establish that the defendant was likely to abscond or interfere with witnesses if released on bail.
The court consequently granted the application but ordered that Umar remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre until he fulfils the bail conditions.
The matter was adjourned until October 29, 2026, for the commencement of further proceedings.
