The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) has released Notice No. 5, publishing the names of aspirants who have submitted their Letters of Expression of Interest to contest in the 2026 National Elections of the Nigerian Bar Association.
According to the notice dated 2 March 2026 and signed by the ECNBA Chairman, Aham Ejelam, SAN, and Secretary, Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa, Esq., the published lists comprise aspirants seeking election as National Officers of the Association and as Representatives of the NBA in the General Council of the Bar (GCB).
The Committee clarified that the submission of Letters of Expression of Interest is separate from the formal nomination process. It emphasised that the ECNBA is yet to call for nominations of candidates, which constitutes a distinct exercise under the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended in 2025).
Aspirants for General Council of the Bar (GCB)
A total of 26 aspirants indicated interest in contesting as Representatives of the NBA in the General Council of the Bar. They include practitioners from branches across the country such as Aba, Calabar, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Owerri, Ibadan, Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Lokoja, Akure, Yola, Jos, and Kaduna, among others.
The list reflects broad geographical spread, with aspirants drawn from the Eastern, Western, Northern, and Central zones of the Association.
Aspirants for National Offices
For National Offices, several senior and prominent members of the Bar have indicated interest in various positions.
For the office of President, those who submitted letters of expression of interest include:
- Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN
- Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN
- Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya SAN
Aspirants also emerged for other key national positions, including 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, 3rd Vice President, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, Treasurer, Welfare Secretary, and Publicity Secretary.
Adherence to Constitutional and Campaign Guidelines
The ECNBA urged all aspirants and members of the Association to strictly comply with the provisions of the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended in 2025) and the Second Schedule thereto.
The Committee further reminded aspirants to adhere to the campaign regulations earlier issued in ECNBA Notice No. 4 dated 13 February 2026, which sets out detailed provisions and restrictions governing campaign conduct for the 2026 elections.
The publication of the list marks another significant milestone in the build-up to the NBA 2026 Elections, as the Association continues preparations for what is expected to be a closely watched national contest.
